Fort Lauderdale-Newport, 8-16 May 2020, 950 Nm
This event takes us North and West from Fort Lauderdale, Miami to Newport. Whether you have been busy racing or taking it easy cruising this is an excellent opportunity to sail back to North America and experience the impressive offshore conveyor belt system that is the Gulf Stream Current.
Running at speeds of up to 5 knots North the Gulf Stream makes it’s way up the East Coast of America carrying billions of tons of warm water North as part of one of the planet’s major climatic processes. The result for us is a warm water trip all the way to Newport rather than the challenge of the temperature cliff we normally experience when travelling North to the East of Bermuda to our home port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
The Gulf Stream Flyer is not all tea & biscuits though with strong thermal gradients that can create regular squalls and dramatic weather along the route. If there was ever a boat to take on such a challenge though it has to be one of our Volvo 60’s that were built to take on the Southern Ocean- we are therefore happy to accept sailors of all skill levels and ages to join us for this exciting and dynamic trip.
The Gulf Stream Flyer is a true sailor’s blue water offshore voyage. It helps to develop every element of our skill set in a safe, professionally mentored environment without the requirement to venture into high latitudes and the middle of the ocean.
“A challenging & rewarding offshore passage in a safe & professionally mentored environment”
