Newfoundland Screech Voyage, June 29 – July 5 2019
Cold, wet, possibly foggy…. Ok, yes definitely foggy….. bouncing around on a 60ft race boat leaping and bashing its way across autumn swells in the North Atlantic, simple food, simple comforts; this is going to be a long way off any romantic idea you may have had about big boat sailing.
However, if we add in the opportunity to helm one of these famous boats at 20kts+, the exhilaration of surfing down waves taller than your house, the companionship & camaraderie of a group of people who are living life to the full, incredible sailing skills development as you learn from a pro-crew who have completed a racing circumnavigation of the world and the opportunity to visit a small slice of Europe on North America’s front step you might start to see this opportunity from our point of view. There is no doubt this little voyage is going to be a whole lot of fun. Foggy, wet, bouncy, grinning, laughing, FUN.
Newfoundland Screech Course
The Newfoundland Screech is a 600 Nm sail from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, Canada. As with any offshore sailing in the Maritimes, the weather can be unpredictable. Sailing on the East Coast of Canada this time of year can also take you to an area famously known as Iceberg Alley. It’s like playing dodgeball with icebergs and they come in all shapes and sizes with only 10% of the iceberg above water combine that with the fog rolling by makes for a navigator’s nightmare or an exciting challenge for others. Iceberg Alley extends from the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland to the tip of the island around St. Anthony with over 1,000 icebergs having been spotted in North Atlantic shipping lanes since February this year.
The Newfoundland Screech is the perfect introduction to offshore Sailing…
For those not in the know- France has a little slice of sovereign territory within 12Nm of Canada in the form of two islands that share a weather report with the most southern tip of Newfoundland. St.Pierre is not some diluted approximation of France however, as per other widely flung territories- this is proper France in all it’s glory slap, bang on North America’s door step.
